Strategies to Measure and Improve Emergency Department Performance (W4018)

In the post-pandemic world, the health care system remains at or over capacity, leaving many organizations struggling with how to meet patient demand. The system is plagued by many issues, including an aging population, exacerbation of acute health conditions, lack of access to primary care providers and urgent care, and staffing issues like shortages, turnover, and burnout. 

Additionally, the emergency department (ED) is an open door for those in need of health care, and overcrowding has become the norm. Overcrowding creates additional risks for a health care organization, including a lack of quality and safe care, regulatory violations, patient dissatisfaction, low staff engagement, physician dissatisfaction, and more. This webinar will share how to overcome these obstacles and more.

Dawn Isaacs, RN



Dawn Isaacs is a registered nurse who joined the Moss Adams Health Care Performance Excellence team after serving as a hospital nursing leader for over 10 years, providing clinical expertise and operational guidance to a variety of teams.

Her area of expertise is in the emergency department, where she helps organizations improve left without being seen (LWBS) rates, door-to-doctor times, and overall emergency department boarding hours.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
  • Discuss the impacts of throughput issues and inefficiencies in the emergency department, including long length of stay, patients left without being seen, boarders, and overcrowding.
  • Describe how length of stay and patient departures before being seen impact the hospital’s bottom line.
  • List major factors contributing to overcrowding in the emergency department and describe the importance of front-end triage accuracy.
  • Review best practices to mitigate risks in the emergency department.
Describe how to benchmark appropriate productivity and discuss the benefits of doing so.
