Michael Dunning is a nationally recognized leader in healthcare safety, security, emergency management, and workplace violence prevention. With more than 30 years of experience spanning the U.S. Air Force, hospital leadership, national consulting, and health system public safety, he has dedicated his career to creating safer, more compassionate environments for patients, staff, and visitors.

Michael most recently served as Assistant Vice President of Public Safety & Emergency Management for ScionHealth, where he supported safety and emergency management operations across more than 100 hospitals in 28 states. He is also the founder of The Healthcare Security Consulting Group, helping healthcare organizations reduce workplace violence, improve readiness, strengthen compliance, and build cultures of trust.

He is the author of The Hello Doctrine, a book that reframes safety as a human practice rooted in presence, empathy, dignity, and connection.

Most hospitals already have pieces of a workplace violence prevention program in place. There may be policies, annual training, incident reporting, committees, security response, or other efforts intended to keep employees and patients safe. But having the pieces does not always mean they work together as a program.

Having a policy, a committee, and annual training may satisfy part of the requirement, but it does not necessarily mean the program is working.

Workplace violence prevention is much more than de-escalation training or responding after something has already happened. A strong program looks at how the organization identifies risk, sets expectations, prepares employees, responds when behavior begins to escalate, supports staff, learns from events, and uses that information to help prevent the next one.

This webinar will take a practical look at what a comprehensive workplace violence prevention program should include and how those pieces connect. Participants will receive a Workplace Violence Prevention Program Readiness Checklist that can be used to take a fresh look at their current program, identify potential gaps, and determine where additional attention may be needed first.

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

• Identify the key components of a comprehensive workplace violence prevention program and how they work together to promote a safer environment.
• Evaluate your organization’s current workplace violence prevention efforts to identify program strengths, gaps, and areas requiring additional attention.
• Apply a workplace violence prevention readiness checklist to prioritize opportunities for improving risk identification, prevention, response, staff support, and organizational learning.
