Georgia patients are protected from surprise medical bills under both the state Surprise Billing and Consumer Protection Act, which became effective Jan. 1, 2021, and the federal No Surprises Act, which became effective Jan. 1, 2022. In this webinar recorded on 2/25/22, experts from GHA and PYA discuss the key elements of and differences between the two acts, including surprise billing, notice requirements, and good faith estimates.

Kathy Reep has more than three decades of leadership experience in the health care industry. Her hospital setting expertise is in compliance, financial advisory, reimbursement, and managed care. Kathy has helped with Medicare, Medicaid, workers’ compensation, reimbursement, and many other complex programs and issues. She is a thought leader and provider educator, helping hospitals navigate regulations and the impact of change.

Prior to joining PYA, Kathy served as vice president of financial services with the Florida Hospital Association. She also held longtime hospital positions, as well as roles working in patients’ business, internal audit, systems management, diagnostic-related group management, and as a reimbursement director

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Cite the requirements of the No Surprises Act
  • Describe the obligation of healthcare providers to give good faith estimates to self-pay patients
  • Recognize the need to monitor compliance with the No Surprises Act and the delivery of good faith estimates
  • Identify the differences between the state and federal laws
