Video Summary
In this Qualibus webinar, Arvin Wan and Carol Tuttes present findings from their inaugural national research study on workforce innovation in healthcare, focusing on how hospitals are tackling staffing challenges through innovation. Leveraging a mixed-methods approach, the study surveyed 53 healthcare leaders and conducted interviews across 43 organizations nationwide. Results highlight a widespread recognition of the urgent need for innovation, with 93% rating it as medium to high priority and 86% reporting increased innovative efforts since the pandemic.

The study reveals leading innovation areas as recruitment, onboarding, and retention, while technologies like virtual nursing have high adoption rates. However, impactful tools such as AI and predictive scheduling remain underutilized despite their potential for significant cost savings—up to $120 billion annually. Innovation is most effective when combining technology (P-type) with strategic organizational changes (S-type), emphasizing workflow redesign, strong sponsorship, and an enabling culture.

Financial pressures, regulatory demands (like updated Joint Commission staffing requirements), and emerging public policies are driving innovation urgency. The presentation concludes with practical strategies for success: starting small with minimum viable projects, crafting compelling, metrics-driven stories for sponsors, fostering project momentum, and leveraging internal and external partnerships. Attendees are encouraged to reflect on how to advance innovative ideas within their own organizations using these insights and frameworks.
