Video Summary
Sarah Arnett presents practical strategies for leading people through organizational change. She distinguishes change—the external event or new situation—from transition, the longer psychological process of adapting. Because people move at different speeds, leaders should support them through William Bridges’ three stages: - Endings: Identify who will lose what, explain why the change is needed, honor the value of past practices, and mark significant endings. - Neutral zone: Acknowledge the uncertainty, set short-term goals, and involve people in improving processes while things are still flexible. - New beginnings: Communicate the launch, model the new behaviors, and recognize early efforts and successes. Arnett recommends repeating the four Ps throughout the process: purpose (why change is needed), picture (what success will look like), plan (steps and timing), and part (what each person is expected to do). She also describes four sources of resistance—people may not know what to do, may be unwilling, may lack the ability or skills, or may not believe the change will last—and stresses that each calls for a different response. Successful change also requires a clear vision, appropriate skills, incentives, resources, and an actionable plan. Leaders should listen to resistance for useful information, involve affected staff early, clarify what will and will not change, and avoid criticizing the past. Through a hospital expansion example, Arnett shows how honoring a beloved green space and involving employees helped prevent disruption and build support.
