Pdf Summary
“Leading Change by the Numbers” explains how leaders can guide people through organizational change. It distinguishes change—an external shift in circumstances or practices—from transition, the internal psychological and emotional process of adapting. Using Bridges’ three transition stages, leaders can: - Endings: identify what people are losing, honor what came before, and mark the ending with a ritual or event. - Neutral Zone: normalize uncertainty, set short-term goals, secure quick wins, and use the period to improve what is not working. - New Beginnings: celebrate early successes and model the desired new behaviors. Across all stages, communication should cover the four Ps: Purpose (why the change is happening), Picture (what success will look like), Plan (the steps), and Part (what people are expected to do). The presentation identifies four common “knots” of resistance: people may not know, not be willing, not be able, or not believe. Leaders can respond with communication, development, performance management, or leadership, respectively. Successful change also depends on five elements: vision, skills, incentives, resources, and an action plan. Gaps in these can lead to confusion, anxiety, resistance, frustration, or wasted time. Finally, leaders should assess each person’s level of support—from actively supportive to actively resistant—through check-ins, interviews, and group discussions, then tailor their approach to what they learn.
